Elegant Ladies on the Beach at Scheveningen, c. 1873
15.5 x 24 cm
Oil on canvas

In the present work, two elegant ladies dressed in the latest fashions are seen taking a stroll on a sun-bleached stretch of beach. To this scene of leisured sophistication, Kaemmerer incongruously adds the remains of a rusty canon, pointed in the same direction, on an otherwise empty stretch of beach, suggesting the pair may be visiting a historic stretch of sand where a past naval battle was fought. Kaemmerer's Beach at Scheveningen, Holland, is a tour-de-force and one of the visual touchstones of the Belle Époque. Painted in 1874, it was exhibited at the Paris Salon the same year, where the artist was awarded a médaille de troisième classe and the work received great acclaim, prompting its swift acquisition by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1875
The panoramic view of this seaside sanctuary, occupied by the most fashionable ladies of the leisure class, is likely the artist’s most ambitious tableau. More on this painting
He began his artistic studies at the Royal Academy of Art with Salomon Verveer, who taught in the Romantic tradition. His early works were mostly landscapes in the style of the Hague School. His first solo exhibition was in 1861 in Rotterdam.

In 1865, attracted by new trends in art, he went to Paris and enrolled at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme and switched to a more Academic style. For a time, he specialized in French genre scenes set in the 18th century, featuring elegant ladies with courteous men. In 1870, he held his first exhibition at the Salon and won a medal there in 1874.

Year VIII was the year 1799 under the French Republican Calendar. Kaemmerer depicts an animated scene, the figures in their Directoire costumes, as a balloon lifts off. These were the pioneering days: the first manned hot air balloon had taken flight sixteen years earlier, in 1783, when Jean-François Rozière and François Laurent had made the first official manned flight across Paris in a balloon built by the brothers Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier. In 1785 Jean Pierre Blanchard, a Frenchman, and the American John Jeffries crossed the English Channel in a balloon, barely escaping falling into the ocean by throwing equipment and even clothing overboard. He established a studio in Paris and became a client of Goupil & Cie, but frequently returned to The Hague with friends and would stay at a seaside hotel in Scheveningen. It was during these stays that he began his transition to Impressionism; inspired by the effects of sunlight on the water and the fleeting changes of light and shadow on the sand. His work in this style proved to be successful, both in France and the Netherlands and he was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle (1889).

The Church of Saint-Roch (French: Église Saint-Roch) is a late Baroque 126 meter-long church in Paris, dedicated to Saint Roch. Located at 284 rue Saint-Honoré, in the 1st arrondissement, it was built between 1653 and 1740.
The church is organized as a series of chapels. One of them is dedicated to Saint Susanna in memory of the church which used to stand in its place. Accordingly, there is a mural painting above the altar, showing Saint Susanna fleeing her attackers, and looking up to the heavens for the help of God. More on The Church of Saint-Roch

Dutch by birth, Kaemmerer made his career as a Saloniste in Paris. He was awarded a médaille de troisième classe at the 1874 Salon and a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. His finely detailed technique and stylish Directoire subjects earned him much praise in Europe and America. More on this painting
He obtained great success for his small paintings representing subjects of the Directory or the First Empire; also internationally successful where American amateurs competed for his works. Renowned for its mundane scenes, it nevertheless remains close to its friends from the school in The Hague and contributes to exchanges between France and Holland.
