He grew up in a well-to-do family. His father was the Town Receiver and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Ostend and created a fund for the benefit of needy fishermen and their families. Little is known of this period in his life, but he apparently became a student of François-Antoine Bossuet at an early age. In the school-year 1837/38, he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp). He was also a private student in the studio of Nicaise de Keyser. It is believed that he was a student of Hendrik Leys, although Leys had no students, properly speaking.

According to legend, the truant Handel—afraid to show his mug at court—plotted with his friend the Baron Kielmansegge to obtain the King’s pardon. When the king and his court took an excursion by barge on the Thames, Kielmansegge chartered a second barge manned by some 50 musicians under Handel’s direction. The music they played – two collections of dances now known as Handel’s Water Music – so captivated King George that he pardoned Handel on the spot and restored him to favor. More on this story

When her fleet of galleys and cargo ships left Calais the 18-year-old Queen of Scots and Dowager Queen of France burst into floods of tears as she said farewell to ma chère France and sailed on a journey to what for her was virtually an unknown country. Mary had been Queen of Scots since she was a baby, only a week old. At the age of five she was sent to France to keep her out of the clutches of the English. At 15 in 1558 she was married to the future Francis II, who was 14. It is thought that she was probably still a virgin when he died two years later. Catherine de Medici, the French queen mother, no longer wanted her in France and Mary decided that her future lay in Scotland. More on Marie-Stuart leaving France

Charles's childhood. A reading of Erasmus, c. 1863
Oil on canvas

Musée d'Orsay

Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus was a Dutch philosopher and Catholic theologian who is considered one of the greatest scholars of the northern Renaissance. As a Catholic priest, he was an important figure in classical scholarship who wrote in a pure Latin style. Among humanists he enjoyed the sobriquet "Prince of the Humanists", and has been called "the crowning glory of the Christian humanists".

The Institutio principis Christiani or "Education of a Christian Prince" (Basel, 1516) was written as advice to the young king Charles of Spain (later Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor). Erasmus applies the general principles of honor and sincerity to the special functions of the Prince, whom he represents throughout as the servant of the people. More on Erasmus

Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie were fond of Hamman's work and in 1863 the French government bought his painting Education of Charles V

He had his formal debut at the Ghent Salon of 1838 with an unspecified "interior scene". His exposure to other artists there led to him being influenced by the style of Louis Gallait. His first success was at the Brussels Salon of 1842, which was followed by a commission to paint a mural, The Triumphant Entry of the Archduke Albert and Isabella to Ostend in 1604, for the Town Hall. Unfortunately, the mural was destroyed during World War II. At this time he also did several illustrations for books by the publishing firm of J.E. Buschmann.

L'Ennui des Riches/ The Boredom of the Wealthy, c.  1845
Oil on panel
47.3 x 40.0 cm
The Royal Collection Trust

A young woman and her older male companion rest on the verge of a path overlooking a valley of lush vegetation. The couple appear to have recently dismounted as the woman carries a riding crop and two horses can be seen in the clearing beyond. A white country house is seen in the distance beneath a calm, blue sky.

The title – ‘The Boredom of the Wealthy’ – is intended to suggest the spiritual emptiness of the cynical and the spoilt. She would seem to have married an exhausted old voluptuary for money and be discontended with the bargain. More on this painting

In 1846 he moved to Paris for further studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he was attracted to the works of Joseph-Nicolas Robert-Fleury and Thomas Couture. In 1849 he made the traditional study trip to Italy. He eventually achieved great fame in France. Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie were fond of his work and in 1863 the French government bought his painting Education of Charles V for 4,000 francs. Among his other notable works from this period are six paintings of Italian history, commissioned by Victor Emmanuel II, and the series "Celebrated Composers", reproductions from which are still in use.

San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th-century Benedictine church on the island of the same name in Venice, northern Italy, designed by Andrea Palladio, and built between 1566 and 1610. The church is a basilica in the classical Renaissance style and its brilliant white marble gleams above the blue water of the lagoon opposite the Piazzetta di San Marco and forms the focal point of the view from every part of the Riva degli Schiavoni. In the teaching of the Catholic Church, an indulgence is "a way to reduce the amount of punishment one has to undergo for sins". The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes an indulgence as "a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven.

The recipient of an indulgence must perform an action to receive it. This is most often the saying (once, or many times) of a specified prayer. More on a request for parson

In later years he turned more to genre painting and portraits, including one of King Norodom of Cambodia, which brought him great distinction in that country. His son, Édouard Michel Ferdinand Hamman (1854-1952) became a landscape painter of some note. More on Edouard Hamman
