The Giudecca Canal is a body of water that flows into the San Marco basin in Venice, Italy.

It is one of the major canals in the city, it bisects the sestieri of Dorsoduro, separating Giudecca island and district from Dorsoduro district.

Albert Chevallier Tayler (1862–1925) was an English artist who specialised in portrait and genre painting, but was also involved in the plein air methods of the Newlyn School. He studied at Heatherley's School of Art, Royal Academy Schools and with avant-garde painters in Paris. He was educated at Bloxham School in Oxfordshire.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was an English poet of the Victorian era, popular in Britain and the United States during her lifetime.

Born in County Durham, the eldest of 11 children, Elizabeth Barrett wrote poetry from the age of eleven. Her mother's collection of her poems forms one of the largest extant collections of juvenilia by any English writer. At 15 she became ill, suffering intense head and spinal pain for the rest of her life. Later in life she also developed lung problems, possibly tuberculosis. She took laudanum for the pain from an early age, which is likely to have contributed to her frail health. More on Elizabeth Barrett Browning

He is most known for his twelve-year involvement with the Newlyn School of painting. The Newlyn school was spawned after many international artists followed the En plein air school in France, whereby artists would leave Paris and take up rural life in small colonies of kindred painters. Thence, as artists returned from France to their own countries, they sought out remote locations to congregate and pursue the En plein air method. The Newlyn School is also known as British Impressionism.

A typical painting of this early period is A Dress Rehearsal (1888) (See above), hung in the National Museums Liverpool. This painting makes use of light and shadow and is based upon a genre scene as might have occurred in Cornwall. The Newlyn School drew their subjects from everyday life in the local area. Other associate artists of the Newlyn School were Henry Scott Tuke, Thomas Cooper Gotch, Caroline Gotch, Stanhope Forbes, Leghe Suthers, Walter Langley and Elizabeth Armstrong.

During the 1890s he maintained connections with the art centre of London and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy; however, at about the turn of the century he moved to London and converted to a more genteel, urban lifestyle. Tayler began painting more grand scenes of the cities of Europe (See at top). In 1901 he painted one of his largest and most masterful works, The Ceremony of the Garter (See above)
, depicting the famous late Middle Ages scene at Eltham Palace in which the fallen garter of Joan of Kent is picked up by King Edward III. This event circa 1348 led to Edward III founding the Order of the Garter. Tayler also painted a series of paintings for St. Ignatius Church of the Sacred Heart – Wimbledon, England (See below).

The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola. St. Ignatius came from a family of minor nobility in Spain’s northern Basque region. One thing to know about Ignatius is that he was far from saintly during much of his young adult life. He was vain, with dreams of personal honor and fame. He gambled and was not above sword fighting. As some have noted, he might be the only saint with a notarized police record: for taking part in a nighttime brawl.

In the spring of 1521, a very large French army attacked the fortress town of Pamplona. A tiny
band of Spanish soldiers trying to defend the town were ready to surrender; all of them except
Iñigo de Loyola. He would hold off the French single-handedly. But a French cannonball
shattered his leg and put an end to his stand. The French admired the courage of the man. They carried him on a litter back home to his castle of Loyola.

During a difficult recovery (he limped for the rest of his life), the young man asked for books about chivalry—his favorite reading.  Since there were none of those at the family castle, he had to settle for a book about the life of Christ and biographies of the saints. Unexpectedly, he found them riveting.

St. Ignatius had always dreamed of heroic deeds, but now, these heroes had names like Francis of Assisi and Catherine of Siena. Ignatius also noticed something strange happening to him.

As soon as he had healed enough to walk, he began a journey to Jerusalem. He traveled through the town of Montserrat, Spain. In an all-night vigil before the Black Madonna in the church of the Benedictine abbey there, he hung up his sword and dagger. Effectively, his old life was over and his new life had begun.

Ignatius begs for alms

The "Pilgrim," as he referred to himself, asked for lodging at a hospital for the poor located outside the town's walls. In exchange for his bed, he did chores around the hospital; and he begged for his food in the town.

This entirely new apostolic spirituality was confirmed by a powerful experience – an “epiphany” – he had one day while sitting and looking down at the River Cardoner flowing far below.

He recorded his experiences in a notebook and would soon find his jottings helpful in guiding
others.

He decided that he needed to get an education in order to "help souls." He returned to Barcelona and attended a free public grammar school to prepare himself for entrance into a university. This meant that beginning at the age of 33 and for two years, he was studying Latin grammar and other basics with classmates who were 8 to 14 years old.

While at the University of Paris, Ignatius roomed with Peter Faber, a young man from Savoy in
the south of France, and Francis Xavier, a nobleman from the eastern end of the Basque country. Gradually a whole circle of "Friends in the Lord," as they called themselves, formed around Ignatius. What bonded them closely together was the fact that one after another they were led through the Spiritual Exercises. Most were guided by Ignatius himself. In a deep sense, they all became "companions of Jesus" and companions of one another.

There is no doubt however, that for Chevallier Tayler, the year 1888 was a watershed and with paintings such as The Departure of the Fishing Fleet, Boulogne, 1891 (Birmingham Art Gallery) (See below), he achieved an exceptional lucidity that lifts late Victorian painting into direct comparison with that of Metsu and Terborch.

Boulogne-sur-Mer, often called just Boulogne, is a coastal city in Northern France.

Boulogne is an ancient town, and was the major Roman port for trade and communication with its Province of Britain. After a period of Germanic presence following the collapse of the Empire, Boulogne was at the centre of the County of Boulogne of the Kingdom of France during the Middle Ages, and was occupied by the Kingdom of England numerous times due to conflict between the two nations. In 1805 it was a staging area for Napoleon's troops for several months during his planned invasion of the United Kingdom.

The city's 12th-century belfry is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site,[6] while another popular attraction is the marine conservation centre Nausicaa. More on Boulogne

By 1903 Tayler was renowned and was commissioned to paint a large panel at the Royal Exchange in London; the resultant painting of The Five Kings depicts Kings Edward III of England, David of Scotland, Peter I of Cyprus, John of France and Waldemar IV of Denmark partaking in a feast hosted by the Master of the Society of Vintners in London in 1363.

Tayler was an avid cricketer, and in 1905 produced a set of twelve watercolours of famous and mostly royal cricket players. Lord Leverhulme used the series to produce lithographs and advertise his Lever Brothers soap products. The promotion proved popular, and the National Portrait Gallery, London has nine of these images hanging (See above). In 1906 he painted a famous picture of a cricket match in progress (See above), Kent vs Lancashire at Canterbury , which was commissioned by Kent. In June 2006, the county sold the painting at auction for £680,000, a record price for a cricket painting. More on
